The "Prefer MP4 over GIF" option is not working at Reddit.
Ripme is always downloading the GIF, although an MP4 version is available and can be downloaded in a browser session.

Can you provide an example link? Does it matter what the site hosting the video is?

It just happens every time. You can try any subreddit. All video download as a GIF then. I never got an MP4 video.
