squash! fixup! wip! Refactor IPC, status and reporters

I've tried to port the API tests, but I did remove some integration
tests that no longer made sense. Hopefully I haven't gone overboard with
that. Ideally we'd rewrite the integration tests but that's a lot of
work.

There's probably some unused fixtures too now.
