julia_0be57b740a_i386.deb fails on Ubuntu 11.10

Or whatever the current version of Ubuntu is. First time through seemed to work, but unable to find any evidence of installation on box in question. Second time through hung Software Center. Haven't tried third time yet. I initially tried to install from source only to have it fail to finish linking (I think) I might try that again after installing the lib mentioned in the notes.

I simply meant, that try this in the terminal:

1. Download the package
2. su - root
3. dpkg -iv julia_0be57b740a_i386.deb

If the installation fails, post the output on the screen.

Ah! I was caught up in trying to build from source and
miss-understood, sorry. The .deb file kills the current Ubuntu
Software Center app but what you suggest might provide and end
run---I'll give it a go.

dpkg does not understand -iv so I tried with:

sudo dpkg -i julia_0be57b740a_i386.deb > install.log
/sbin/ldconfig.real: /usr/local/lib/libstdc++.so.6.0.16-gdb.py is not
an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start.

And after switching to /usr/share/julia and running .julia I get a
segmentation fault.

install.log gave no errors:

(Reading database ... 326092 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace julia 0be57b7 (using julia_0be57b740a_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement julia ...
Setting up julia (0be57b7) ...
Processing triggers for libc-bin ...
ldconfig deferred processing now taking place

This was followed with the 'not an ELF file' sent to STDERR.
