The grub package on Ubuntu 24.04 doesn't appear to support the MBR paritioning scheme used on the root disk of engines that were initially installed on 5.3.9.0 or earlier (i.e. illumos based engines).Problem
The solution taken here is to use the grub packages from our 2025.3.0.1 release.Solution
