indexAction empty in Index controller ( Magento/Core/Controller )

Ehy team,

I don't know whether it's intentional or not but there is an empty indexAction in app/code/Magento/Core/Controller/Index.php .

Is that intentional?
If yes, why is that way?

Maybe because the indexAction has a special purpose, i.e. when you provide no action in url, "indexAction" is assumed. And seeing how all custom Controllers should extend the core one, we all get index actions by default.

But writing this made me think about how the indexAction should be in an interface ("DefaultActionAware"?).

Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

Yes @nevvermind , when you provide no action in url, "indexAction" is assumed. But afaik, is assumed in the frontcontroller/controller/* you're calling. Additionally, a custom controller will extend Mage_Core_Controller_Front_Action (now changed to \Magento\App\Action\Action), not the one I mentioned, unfortunately.

So the question remains. Actually I don't know if this empty controller is used somewhere else in the code (I didn't opened all mage files :) but note that older Magento versions are affected (1.7.0.2 and 1.8.0.0 at least).

Never mind. Found the reason in (v1.7.0.2 & v1.8.0.0):

app/code/core/Mage/Core/Controller/Varien/Router/Standard.php

Here we have the Core/Controller/IndexController -> indexAction setup as a fallback through the fetchDefault method ( in mage2, we have it in Magento\Core\App\Router\NoRouteHandler ).
