There are two copies of css/style.css in your application. One in src/main/webapp and one in src/main/resources/static. You do not need the former. If I delete it, your application works fine with 1.5.3.

You deleted the wrong file. You don't need any static resources in src/main/webapp. They should all be in src/main/resources/static
