oh i just forgot a crucial detail: git never stores empty directories! so you might want to create empty files afterwards:

find "${DIRECTORY}/${programmingLanguage}/" -mindepth 2 -maxdepth 2 \
  -exec touch -- "{}/empty.txt" \;
git add "${DIRECTORY}/${programmingLanguage}/"
