This came up in #728

At the moment build and test artefacts are packaged if present.

things to exclude:

doc/_build* (or move build outside doc into root)
__pycache__/*
*.py[cod]

Did I forget something?

I would prefer we avoid Manifest.in and just use setup.py. That being said how come we need to filter out? Setuptools really should include only py files, not?

This came up in a release candidate last year, where these files ended up in the package. AFAIK manifest.in is the correct way to handle this and we have a manifest.in in already - it was just incomplete.

This came up in a release candidate last year, where these files ended up in the package - my question was that they really shouldn't have been automatically included; do we know why they were still there? are they there for the sdist only or for the wheel too? According to my experience and knowledge manifest.in is the more widely supported approach - but really not necessary at the end of day.

I don't understand the question: they are included, when they are not explicitly excluded. How would you deal with this?

Setuptools does not include things blindly. It takes a defensive approach instead. It only includes only Python (aka py files) specified in it's package list https://github.com/tox-dev/tox/blob/master/setup.py#L45. If pycache stuff get's included it's because something is actively putting there, we should understand what and how. E.g. did you notice the wheel too to have these cache files? Or only in sdist is there (in which case could be a setuptools-scm side effect).

No I didn't. For me adjusting the manifest without investigating it further is a good enough solution, but if you want to have a closer look you will have to reproduce the problem locally as the broken build is not on devpi anymore (it was overwritten by a fixed version). You would have to try to reproduce this by running tests locally (which creates the unwanted cruft) and then build the package.

Also (no extra issues for that):

    removed all experimental markers from docstrings (most of them have been there for a few years already). If they turn out wrong/bad, we just have to deprecate them and remove them in a major release
    hookimpl is instantiated twice - mark one of them as deprecated and get rid of it later
    moved hookimpl to __init__.py - having a hookimpl object in the hookspecs module is unnecessary and confusing. Access to hookimpl should happen as module attribute of tox (clearer where it comes from) - also kept a deprecated reference there for compatibilty.
    removed some redundant rst references in hookspecs. If they are initialized once in any namespace they are defined globally (I don't like it either but that is how it works in restructuredText and ignoring that and defining the same things several times is confusing)
    move _dummy object to only class where it is needed and name it like the constant that it is
    use six for py2/3 compatibility where noticed it and where it is cheap to do
    remove dead code
    move exception related code into its own module rather than having it hang around in a class looking like a module in __init__.py
    there is no need to have an intermediate run_main - that is used everywhere only under the name tox.cmdline rename function and use it directly, just like client code is using it
    add a fixture for working in a clean tmpdir

Seems to me you've just used the big cannon where maybe just a swift stroke of pen was needed. I suppose it solves the problem but did not see or needed this exclusion anywhere else.

AFAIU this is exactly what you do in MANIFEST.in. How would you deal with this?

IIRC setuptools-scm takes care of only including into an sdist files that are tracked by git. Since using setuptools-scm I no longer had to worry about MANIFEST.in and the packages always contain the correct files.

@nicoddemus my problem is that setuptools-scm gets too greedy, I really don't want to include my .travis.yml e.g. into the package, even though it is in scm. That being said, with a filter on top of that, one can leave. Note setuptools-scm adds things only to sdist, but not to wheel. The wheel is handled by setuptools packages and resources part.

Is it deactivated maybe if you use a minifest.in? I actually wasn't aware that it does that at all.
