This PR removes the deprecated sync access to Dynamic APIs.

  • Removed UnsafeUnwrapped* types.
  • Replaced as unknown as UnsafeUnwrapped type casts to as any for dev warning.
  • Removed tests that expected sync access to not error.
  • Removed UntrackedExotic functions.
  • Modified tests that were accidentally doing sync access.
  • Updated warnings to emphasize that it is a Promise and must be awaited.
  • Removed paragraph that states access is allowed from errors/sync-dynamic-apis.mdx.

Analysis

Codemod generates broken TypeScript imports for removed UnsafeUnwrapped types

What fails: The castTypesOrAddComment() function in next-async-dynamic-api.ts references UnsafeUnwrappedCookies, UnsafeUnwrappedHeaders, and UnsafeUnwrappedDraftMode types that no longer exist in Next.js

How to reproduce:

# TypeScript compilation fails when trying to import these types:
import { type UnsafeUnwrappedHeaders } from 'next/headers'
# Error: Module '"next/headers"' has no exported member 'UnsafeUnwrappedHeaders'

Result: Codemod attempts to import non-existent types and generate type casting expressions, causing TypeScript compilation errors during Next.js 15 migration

Expected: Codemod should only add migration comments without trying to import removed types, per Next.js migration docs which recommend proper async/await patterns

Fix: Removed API_CAST_TYPE_MAP and simplified castTypesOrAddComment() to only add migration comments instead of broken type casting

functionally looks good minus the one spot where the cache components envvar couldn't be removed.

We need to revisit the warnings however. We need to rephrase them to make it emphatic that these are Promises and must be awaited or React.use'd.

We also need to rewrite errors/sync-dynamic-apis.mdx to convey the same intent

seems like an oversight that this was not gated by process.env.NODE_ENV === 'development' should add that and make a version that is just a plain promise

It's gated by packages/next/src/client/request/search-params.browser.ts, so packages/next/src/client/request/search-params.browser.prod.ts does have a plain promise version.

I can't leave the comment where i want b/c it wasn't changed but the has and ownKeys trap on the proxied promise in makeErroringSearchParamsForUseCach should go away. we don't need to trip these b/c they aren't representing genuine searchParams introspection they're just going to be telling you whether Promise has the key and giving you ownKeys of a Promise.

this message doesn't need to be chaged. this is triggered when you do await searchParams because the await accesses the .then on the promise. awaiting wouldn't help here since you are using export const dynamic = "error"

warnForEnumeration doesn't need to take a list of missingProperties. we shouldn't even create the missingProperties array anymore because the concept only makes sense if you are doing the exotic thing

Leave only the UnsafeUnwrapped* changes so we can incrementally update the tests

Because they are not exotic and will not be able to access the properties via spreading. Therefore we can just warn that you "must" await or React.use without listing the well known properties.
.then() still works with test, but when we try with async await, the postpone error is orphaned it's no longer handled. It is skipped at https://github.com/vercel/next.js/blob/11f721eeda6e6c4133faa8e484491d03f7a06a62/packages/next/src/export/worker.ts#L606-L619

This one shouldn't be updated. this error only happens in non dynamicIO cases where simply calling connection is like marking the render as dynamic. Additionally while connection returns a promise it has no properties so it's only used when you want to mark the current scope as dynamic. I think you can revert the wording and just add () to the function expression

packages/next-codemod/transforms/lib/async-request-api/next-async-dynamic-api.ts (lines 298-302):

The codemod references UnsafeUnwrapped types that were removed from Next.js exports, which will cause the codemod to fail when users try to use it.

Analysis

Codemod generates non-existent UnsafeUnwrapped types causing TypeScript compilation errors

What fails: The next-async-request-api codemod in castTypesOrAddComment() attempts to import and use UnsafeUnwrappedCookies, UnsafeUnwrappedHeaders, and UnsafeUnwrappedDraftMode types from next/headers, but these types no longer exist in Next.js exports.

How to reproduce:

# Create a test file with Next.js API calls
echo 'import { cookies } from "next/headers"; export default function Page() { return cookies().get("token") }' > page.tsx

# Run the codemod
npx @next/codemod@canary next-async-request-api ./page.tsx

# Try to compile the result
npx tsc --noEmit page.tsx

Result: TypeScript compilation fails with errors:

  • Module '"next/headers"' has no exported member 'UnsafeUnwrappedCookies'.
  • Module '"next/headers"' has no exported member 'UnsafeUnwrappedHeaders'.
  • Module '"next/headers"' has no exported member 'UnsafeUnwrappedDraftMode'.

Expected: Codemod should generate valid TypeScript that compiles without missing type errors. Per Next.js v15 upgrade docs, the migration should use any type casts instead of the removed UnsafeUnwrapped types.
