This command is hardly inspired by #2248, to work-around ValueError: No available memory for the cache blocks. Try increasing 'gpu_memory_utilization' when initializing the engine. error.

@alexander-potemkin Can you try adding -n 1 to your openai command?

I spent some time looking at openai and I think the issue is that its CLI defaults n to None instead of 1 as they state on their API reference if you don't specify, so it would be great if you can see if this is indeed the issue.

@alexander-potemkin it would be helpful to dump the full HTTP request generated by the openai CLI. It looks like it's passing something as null instead of leaving it undefined. This looks like a bug in the upstream project, not vLLM.

If the Python client works but not the CLI, don't you think this would be a bug on openai since they shouldn't behave differently?

I agree with you - there is no reason to support every deviation - it will consume an enormous amount of energy.

I would, however, based on that issue implement a simple check on server's input: if there are any null/none/etc, raise HTTP error 400 and save in the logs which exact argument caused that.
