This change adds an upper limit for the transformers package version
because Whisper fails to load with the latest version (4.53.0). I'm not
sure if the problem affects other models yet.

👋 Hi! Thank you for contributing to the vLLM project.

💬 Join our developer Slack at https://slack.vllm.ai to discuss your PR in #pr-reviews, coordinate on features in #feat- channels, or join special interest groups in #sig- channels.

Just a reminder: PRs would not trigger full CI run by default. Instead, it would only run fastcheck CI which starts running only a small and essential subset of CI tests to quickly catch errors. You can run other CI tests on top of those by going to your fastcheck build on Buildkite UI (linked in the PR checks section) and unblock them. If you do not have permission to unblock, ping simon-mo or khluu to add you in our Buildkite org.

Once the PR is approved and ready to go, your PR reviewer(s) can run CI to test the changes comprehensively before merging.

To run CI, PR reviewers can either: Add ready label to the PR or enable auto-merge.

Summary of Changes

Hello @russellb, I'm Gemini Code Assist1! I'm currently reviewing this pull request and will post my feedback shortly. In the meantime, here's a summary to help you and other reviewers quickly get up to speed!

This pull request introduces a critical dependency version constraint to resolve a known issue where the transformers library's latest version causes failures, particularly when loading the Whisper model. By pinning the maximum allowed version, it ensures the stability and functionality of the build system and dependent models.

Highlights

  • Dependency Management: An upper version limit has been added for the transformers Python package in requirements/common.txt.
  • Issue Mitigation: This change specifically addresses an issue where the Whisper model fails to load with transformers version 4.53.0, as detailed in issue #20224, by preventing the use of this problematic version.

Code Review

This pull request aims to add an upper version limit for the transformers package to prevent an issue with Whisper models. My review found a potential critical issue where the implemented version constraint seems to contradict the problem description, potentially making the fix ineffective. I've left a comment with a suggestion to address this.

critical

There seems to be a discrepancy between the pull request description and the implemented change.

The description states:

Whisper fails to load with the latest version (4.53.0).

However, the version constraint added is ... <= 4.53.0, which allows pip to install version 4.53.0. If this version is indeed faulty, this change will not resolve the issue.

To exclude the problematic version, the constraint should likely be < 4.53.0.

Could you please confirm if version 4.53.0 is the one causing the failure? If so, please update the version specifier.

Thanks for the fix!

Is that < 4.53.0 or <= 4.53.0?

Is that < 4.53.0 or <= 4.53.0?

needed to be < 4.53.0 since 4.53.0 was the version that was broken -- good catch, I had it wrong!
